Lists in Benji

Create and manage ongoing collections of tasks that never need to be completed.

What are Lists?

In Benji, lists are permanent collections of tasks that exist indefinitely. Unlike projects, which are designed to be completed, lists are ongoing and can be used to track recurring or continuous types of tasks.

Common List Use Cases

  • Video ideas
  • Gift ideas
  • Books to read
  • Movies to watch
  • Recipes to try
  • Shopping lists
  • Bucket list items
  • Home improvement ideas
  • Learning resources
  • Travel destinations

List Management Features

Benji provides several powerful features to help you manage your lists effectively:

Hide from Sidebar

You can hide specific lists from the sidebar to reduce clutter. Hidden lists are still accessible through:

  • The Spotlight search (Cmd+K)
  • Direct links
  • The "All Lists" view

This is particularly useful for lists you don't need to access frequently but want to keep for reference.

Pause Lists

You can temporarily pause a list, which prevents its tasks from appearing in your Overview or other aggregated views. This is useful for:

  • Seasonal lists (e.g., holiday gift ideas)
  • Project-specific lists that are only relevant during certain periods
  • Lists that might be distracting during busy times

Paused lists can be easily unpaused when you're ready to work on them again.

Hide from Overview

For lists that you want to keep active but don't want cluttering your main Overview, you can set them to "not show in overview." This means:

  • The list remains active and accessible
  • Tasks from the list don't appear in your main Overview
  • You can visit the list's dedicated page to view and manage its tasks

This is perfect for specialized lists that you want to manage separately from your day-to-day tasks.

Collaboration

Just like projects, lists can be shared with other Benji users for collaboration. This enables:

  • Shared shopping lists with family members
  • Collaborative idea boards with colleagues
  • Group planning for events or trips
  • Team resource collections

You can assign tasks within shared lists to specific collaborators, making it clear who's responsible for what.
